Seville – A Month Doesn’t Seem Long Enough

We came to Seville, Spain expecting some good food and wine. What Baharak and I didn’t expect was the overall happy vibe. Not that we thought the folks here would be moping around, but when you stroll down the cobblestone streets and see dozens of people laughing, singing, sharing stories and back slaps and dancing away in the square, it sure puts a smile on your face. Yesterday afternoon our neighbour broke out into song, slapping his leg while passionately singing a Spanish tune..it was great.

As Baharak and I approach retirement age, we’ve been talking about the kind of life we want. While on the road for a full year back in 2016-17 we quickly learned that living out of a backpack and seeing brand new sites almost daily was the life for us. We’ve talked a lot over the past few years about this lifestyle, how to begin, where to go, etc..So our month here in Seville is an early step in that direction. We’ve also downsized a century old home in the burbs to a small city condo. Our son is also becoming self-sufficient and is able to help with any needs my father may have. While permanent travel is likely still a few years in the future, we’re beginning a month-long adventures here and there, getting a taste of it. Just this week we booked our next one – the Camino de Santiago, a month-long hike across northern Spain, about 800 km, that we’ll be doing in May of 2025.

Now about Seville

We’re 3 weeks into a month in Seville, with a couple days in Cadiz and a couple in Malaga at the end. I should probably start with the food. Most folks have heard of Tapas, but trying the real deal is heaven. I like eating smaller portions of everything and trying three of four different dishes. Lucky for us a few of our favourite spots are just around the corner.

For those who know the city, we’re just off Feria in the San Gil neighbourhood. El Puma Bar and Ojala have become quick favs with the best pork cheeks and little fishes I’ve ever had. We’ve been to maybe a dozen different places already and all have been nice. Puma is probably my fav. though. Love the vermouth, the tapas and a very friendly British host.

You Love Walking, You’d Love Seville

Just about everyday we’re off exploring the narrow streets of Seville. So much to see. Just this morning while walking back from the Feria street vintage market, I saw a Roman column embedded in the corner of a building. I recall reading that it was an authentic antiquity. We have our favourites already, walking down Feria and Regina to The Setas, then maybe around the Alcazar for a bit then loop back home. It’s a great way to spend a couple hours. I’ll let some photos do the talking for this bit.

November is Perfect in Seville

We’re already talking about making Seville a regular November stay. The weather is perfect and it’s not over crowded. This morning they were pruning some of the thousands of orange trees that line the streets, smelled nice and citrusy. I’ll end here – just wanted to get the ball rolling with new posts. I’ll do a few more that are more location specific. Our overall feeling of this town though is fantastic. Great vibe, nice folks, awesome food..lots to like.
