Back in the saddle. It’s been five years already since Baharak, Kasm and I returned from a life changing adventure. We took our then nine year old son out of elementary school and spent a year traveling around the world with him. It ended up being a four-continent, twenty-five country trip of a lifetime. We have so many fantastic memories of that trip and still chat about it often (I’m sure it annoys the hell out of our friends). But we can’t keep living in the past, as fun as it is to reminisce about some of our favourite destinations. Baharak and I are tentatively planning the next big adventure and that is to become perpetual travellers, true nomads. If all goes well we will load up our now even smaller backpacks and head out on the road in 2024.
Son Growing Up and Us Going Full Nomad
A lot of the departure time rests on our son’s educational plans. Once he finishes high school he’ll have some options to consider. There is CEGEP, which is a type of pre-college here in Quebec, there’s moving on to grade twelve at a new school or, our great hope, spending a year at sea doing his grade twelve on a tall ship. This is called Class Afloat and we think it will be his best option. Of course it would mean saying goodbye to his friends for about eight months – so we’ll do our best to encourage him but at his age, the final decision will be his. I’m getting ahead somewhat as this is still a couple years away, but if he goes on the ship it will enable Baharak and I to figuratively set sail ourselves. We both pine for life on the road. If you are a nomad or even just enjoy travel, you’ll know exactly what I mean. So, we’re in the very early days of planning her retirement and a new chapter for us.
Still Plenty of Places to Explore
While we daydream about the next big adventure we are still traveling. I only briefly touched on our trip to the Baltics in 2019 (I’ll have some photo-heavy posts coming up on that) and a trip to Colombia in 2018. We also visited New York City just as Covid was spreading and a trip to Mexico in the midst of it.
This year we spent a couple weeks in Ireland’s west country and are planning on a couple solo trips for 2023. So, a decent amount of places and photos to share. This site acts as an amazing souvenir for my family, filled with photos and stories, a huge help as I get older and the memory dulls a tad, but we also hope that as you browse around we may help feed that little bug inside you that craves exploring. You’re welcome. If you want to follow along feel free to drop your name onto our mailing list and we’ll send an email when there’s an update.
Awesome update! I hope we will meet up somewhere in the world again. 😊
