Some Pictures of Nazaré, Portugal

After three months of bouncing around, packing and unpacking, running through train stations looking for the connecting train’s platform number, standing in passport control queues, packing some more, looking for apartments, waiting for hosts, wondering if the cab driver speaks any English…it feels very nice to find a home and do nothing for a few weeks.

We’re half way through our relaxing stay in Nazaré, Portugal and loving the chilled atmosphere. The timing I must say has been perfect. We were not yet getting overly stressed with the constant moving about – but I could feel it coming. 12 countries, countless bus rides and not knowing anything about tomorrow’s sleeping situation or always wondering ‘is there a market nearby’ does start to wear you down. A nice rest at a charming beach town fits the bill nicely. Welcome to Nazaré.

And yes, there is a market nearby. A very nice one – with a grocery store across the street for the staples. A beach about 40 meters away, a lovely boardwalk for taking strolls in the afternoon, no buses to catch – lots to enjoy here. Here are some photos I took over the past week to give you some visuals on Nazaré. Great to relax for a bit, especially since our next destination is India.

Stunning tile work can be seen all over town, this one by an old water fountain.

One interesting thing about Nazaré are the older ladies. They have a particular style of dress with very large skirts. They seem to rule the place. You also see ladies all dressed in black, widows, some selling dried sardines along the beach, others just keeping an eye on things.

Copious amounts of sardines sunning on the beach. Great for tourists snapping photos.

For friends and family reading this – our apartment is in the bottom corner, a block off the boardwalk, the one with three white skylights.

If you find yourself backpacking around Europe and pine for a place to chill for a while we recommend Nazaré, Portugal. Nice folks, terrific beach, nice restaurants with great seafood – even a very nice Indian place that we’ve already been to twice, Nazaré is the perfect place to rest up.
